Standard IV drug infusions for neonates

Mar 27, 2025

Category: Pharmacist

Following the publication of the UK national framework for recommended standard concentration IV drug infusions for neonates Standard Infusions Nov 2024  the London Neonatal ODN has agreed that it supports this change in practice, across the region.

Some units have already adopted standard concentration drug infusions, and others are in the process of implementing this change. Some units haven’t started yet, and are possibly wondering where to begin. The ODN will support your unit as you navigate these changes.

Key stakeholders such as medics, nurses, pharmacists, digital teams and medical physics departments will all need to work together to agree and implement the necessary changes, at each unit.

Local and national IV guidelines (such as Medusa/Neomate) and formularies will be updated with information on the recommended standard IV drug concentrations.

Education and training will be provided to ensure that nursing staff understand how to make up standard concentration IV drug infusions (until ready-to-use or ready-to-administer preparations are available).
