Omeprazole liquid

Most neonatal units do not routinely prescribe omeprazole liquid for managing reflux, but it is sometimes given to infants in surgical centres e.g. post-surgical TOF repair. It is worth noting that if your neonatal unit stocks the licensed Rosemont brand, it contains potassium hydrogen carbonate as an excipient. If babies are receiving higher than the licensed dose (e.g. 3mg/kg/day) they may be receiving an additional 1mmol/kg/day potassium. Unlicensed omeprazole liquid preparations do not contain potassium – please check with your pharmacy which preparation you are using.
