In November 2024, the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacy Group (NPPG) updated their ‘Standardising Intravenous Infusions for Neonates and Children in the UK’ publication (Standard-Infusions-Nov-2024-Final.pdf) to include many more recommended concentrations for babies under 2kg.

These recommendations are endorsed by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM), Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).

In 2025, the London Neonatal ODN will review the recommendations and will start planning how to roll-out these out. Strategic support will be available from the ODN to help individual units to implement this change in practice.

The NPPG also published a position statement in November 2024 on ‘Minimising Inconsistent Drug Delivery via Continuous Intravenous Infusion in Neonates’ (Neonatal-Infusion-Position-Statement-V1.pdf).

Some infographics have been created (BAPM pump height info graphic (Document (A4) which can be printed and displayed in neonatal units to remind neonatal staff of the recommendations.
