In Neonatal Service

Understanding trauma. Supporting families. Caring for ourselves. Improving care

A neonatal admission can be an overwhelming and potentially traumatic experience for babies and their families. How we communicate, respond and provide care can make a lasting difference.

This interactive Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) study day explores how we can use trauma-informed approaches to provide neonatal care that is more compassionate, inclusive, equitable and responsive to the individual needs of every baby and family.

Throughout the day, we will explore the principles of trauma-informed care and, importantly, what they mean in everyday neonatal practice. Together, we will consider how trauma can influence a family’s experience of neonatal care, communication, relationships, engagement with services and wellbeing during and beyond their neonatal journey.

The programme will explore the role of the whole multidisciplinary team, bringing trauma-informed principles to life through discussion, reflection and practical application. We will also consider how these principles can inform service development and improvement, helping us create neonatal environments and systems that recognise individual needs, reduce barriers to care and support families experiencing inequalities or marginalisation.

Importantly, trauma-informed care is not only about how we care for families. It also asks us to think about how we care for ourselves and each other. Neonatal professionals work in emotionally demanding environments, and creating psychologically safe, compassionate teams is fundamental to providing compassionate care.

By the end of the day, we hope you will leave with greater confidence, practical ideas and a fresh perspective on how small changes in our interactions, teams and services can make a meaningful difference to babies, families and staff.

Come ready to participate, reflect, share experiences and learn from colleagues across neonatal services.

The full agenda will be shared closer to the event. Attendance for the whole day is required, as each session builds on the last and dedicated time is included for discussion, peer learning, reflection and support.
