The course has been co-produced with bereaved and other parents, and professionals from a range of disciplines including psychology, nursing, and midwifery. It is 4 hours long and can be completed step by step in your own time on smart phones or computers. Each step takes around 5 minutes and consists of short text and graphics, case studies, audio, videos with bereaved parents, and discussion steps which are conversations that all learners can join to ask questions and share their experiences. There are links to relevant websites, pdfs to download, templates for letters and plans, aide memoirs, and further reading/references.

This new online learning course based on the BAPM framework for Managing Uncertainty in Perinatal Medicine & Palliative Care and relevant to all healthcare professionals working in midwifery, fetal medicine, paediatrics and neonatal.

The course is available for free if NHS free NHS access here , and you get a certificate on completion for CPD.

The courses are also available to non-NHS staff (academics, students, parents etc.) via the Future Learn platform, but free access is time-limited to 4 weeks. Feedback is excellent and we >400 learners have already joined the course. It is endorsed by major charities and advocacy groups including Sands, Bliss, Child Bereavement UK, Together for Short lives, Antenatal Results and Choices (ARC), FICare, BMFMS, GFCNI etc.

Managing Uncertainty in Perinatal Medicine & Palliative Care – free NHS access here  will help you support families through uncertain perinatal journeys with holistic care and communication strategies and is based on the British Association of Perinatal Medicine, BAPM, framework (2024) but includes many additional aspects. It will help HCPs and parents navigate the complex conversations and management challenges when a baby (or fetus) has an uncertain future, for example a complex genetic syndrome or heart condition diagnosed at 20 weeks pregnancy, a sick newborn preterm infant, or a term infant with unexpected HIE. The course considers communication essentials, continuity of care, how HCPs deal with stress and the moral burden of decision making, MDT decisions, letter writing and Advance Care Plans, cultural sensitivity, working with interpreters, long term planning and hospice care, end of life care, symptom management, legal and ethical issues, compassionate leadership and memory making.
